The market is where Hausa comes alive. Prices are negotiated, greetings are exchanged, and a little language goes a very long way. Here are the words you’ll reach for first.
Greetings open every sale
Never start with the price. Start with the person:
- Sannu — hello
- Ina kwana? — good morning (literally, “how was the night?”)
- Lafiya lau — all is well
Asking and bargaining
- Nawa ne? — how much is it?
- Akwai rangwame? — is there a discount?
- Ya yi tsada — it’s expensive
- Rage mini — reduce it for me
Closing politely
- Na gode — thank you
- Sai an jima — see you later
Bargaining in a Hausa market is conversation, not confrontation. Smile, take your time, and use the greetings—sellers warm quickly to anyone who makes the effort.
